Event Description

From humble beginnings in the remote Pilbara, psychologist and proud Nyamal woman Tracy Westerman has redefined what’s possible at every turn.
Tracy became the first Aboriginal person in Australia to complete a PhD in Clinical Psychology, rising to become one of the country’s foremost psychologists. In her ground-breaking memoir, Jilya, Tracy offers a no-holds-barred reflection on how the one-size-fits-all approach to psychology is failing Aboriginal people and how she’s addressing this.
Dr Westerman has long been considered a critical thought leader in Aboriginal mental health, suicide prevention and cultural competency.
Dr Westerman has received many awards including an Order of Australia, Telstra Women’s Business Award Winner (WA) and Australian of the Year (WA).
Jilya has remained on the Amazon best seller categories and was recently announced as the winner of the 2025 UTS Glenda Adams Award for New Writing in the NSW Premiers Book Awards.

Hear Dr Tracy Westerman AM in conversation with Leanne Dolby this Reconciliation Week.
Jilya Books will be for sale.
